MIG/METAL ACTIVE/INERT GAS WELDING
MIG welding by far is the easiest welding method to learn, wire is usually stored internally in the machine and with a touch of the trigger feeds out the tip at the same time shielding gas flows, as the wire touches the work piece a powerful arc is created and this creates intense heat that melts the metal while simultaneously feeding additional wire into the now molten pool of metal, shielding gas is used to keep oxygen away so a tough weld can be created.
PROS: Fast welding, easy to get the hang of, no need for slag removal, more cost effective
CONS: Can struggle to get penetration, requires heavy gas bottles, machines are more complex and costly, shielding gas blows away in windy conditions
TIG/ TUNGSTEN INERT GAS WELDING
TIG welding is similar to MIG welding but instead of feeding wire internally it is instead held in the hand and is added when needed, the arc comes from electric jumping from a tungsten electrode held just above the work piece in a torch body, this creates a arc which is hot enough to melt the metal while argon shielding gas is provided to keep oxygen away from the weld.
PROS: Can weld thin delicate metals, creates no sparks, welds exotic materials
CONS: Travel speeds and deposition rates are relatively low, increasing weld cost, A high degree of operator skill is required to produce quality welds
MMA/ MANUAL METAL ARC WELDING
MMA welding is the most common type of welding on sites as its the most robust method of welding, a solid core of metal is surrounded by a layer of flux, when the arc is started by contacting the tip of the electrode with the work piece a arc is created melting the electrode back depositing it on the work piece at the same time, the flux on the outside is then burnt off creating a cloud of shielding gas protecting the weld
PROS: highly portable process and is often used for site and field work. Also, MMA welding is typically more 'forgiving' than MIG or TIG when welding rusty or dirty materials, which makes it ideal for maintenance applications
CONS: Lower efficiency – more waste is generally produced during arc welding than many other types, which can increase project costs in some cases, High skill level – operators of arc welding projects need a high level of skill and training, and not all professionals have this
